New London facilities creating new jobs

When we celebrate the creation of new jobs in London, the jobs usually relate to private industry jobs, created through the attraction of a new company to London, or an expansion to an existing business.  We tend to forget about the expansion of public and non-profit organizations and the impact they have on the London economy.

The new North London Community Centre, YMCA and Library facility currently under construction at Adelaide and Sunningdale is an 84,000 square foot, $30 million joint venture between the City of London, the YMCA of Western Ontario and the London Public Library that is creating 30 new full time jobs and 75 part time jobs.

Goodwill Industries recently announced their new $12 million Social Enterprise Abilities Centre, the 83,000 square foot facility currently under construction in London’s SoHo Neighbourhood.  The Centre will draw 200,000 shoppers and 50,000 donors a year, as well as tens of thousands of people for training and employment services annual.  The project will create between 75 and 100 jobs both directly and through spin off initiatives.

The Abilities Centre will include a Social Enterprise cafe, where individuals can be trained in culinary and customer service skills, a community store, a drop off and material handling facility for donations, corporate services office and classrooms and conference facilities that could accommodate 350 to 400 people.

Watch for their opening in the spring of 2011.

This workshop is designed to give manufacturers an enhanced understanding of how to leverage their unique operation and product innovations as strategic competitive advantages.   Canadian manufacturers have proven to be especially robust in the global market, contending with inflation, parity of the Canadian dollar, and increased competition globally.  Continued success for Canadian manufacturers has been driven by innovations in process, personnel, and product.   Hear from 3M and other leading Canadian companies on how embracing innovation as a strategic competitive advantage has lead to their corporate growth.  The workshop agenda includes case studies, strategic and practical advice on how to leverage your strengths, as well as presentations from Canada’s leading funding bodies for innovation: NRC-IRAP, Industry Canada, and the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade.  Space is limited for this workshop.

Help the next generation aspire to do great things

How?  Join Western’s network of employers in hosting a Social Science student for our 3rd annual Job Shadowing Program during the month of November.

Hosting a student is a great way to increase your company/organization’s recognition on campus among the best and brightest students and provides an easy way for you to give back with flexibility and very little time commitment.  By hosting a student you will help strengthen student successes and workforce readiness and allow students to see first hand the skills they will need to be successful in the future.

↓Click here for the full story..

Providing an opportunity for a student to job shadow entails spending one half or full day with a student at your workplace and may include activities such as introducing your job, exchanging ideas, discussing your role and responsibilities, giving a tour of the workplace and an opportunity to observe your daily routine.  Due to issues of confidentiality and workplace limitations, some employers have presented the day in a group format hosting multiple students, have arranged for a student to spend time with multiple people in a variety of roles and have even taken them on work calls on field work assignments.  The program is flexible; Western encourages you to plan activities that make sense for you.

If you are interested in participating, please contact Social Science Career Services and they will match you with a student with similar career interests.  The student you are hosting will contact you at the end of October to arrange a mutually agreeable day and time.  In the meantime, Western will provide you with a detailed information sheet.
